National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

The Gallaudet University Professional Education Unit (PEU) is fully accredited by the National Council on Accreditation and Teacher Education (NCATE). Our Doctor of Philosophy and Education Specialist degree programs are in Gallaudet University's professional Education Unit (PEU). Our Master of Science in Administration program is not an education preparation program, and therefore it is not part of the PEU, and therefore it is not under the NCATE umbrella.

Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools

Gallaudet University is also accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). An FAQ (Frequently-Asked Questions) bulletin about Gallaudet and MSCHE accreditation is available online.

Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards for School Leaders

The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) is a program of the Council of Chief State School Officers that created entry-level performance standards for school leaders. These standards were derived from research on effective education leadership and the wisdom of successful education leaders. The original standards were drafted by personnel from 24 state education agencies and representatives from various professional associations. The standards present a common core of knowledge, dispositions (attitudes), and performances (skills) thought to represent effective leadership. The ISLLC standards are also compatible with the new National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) curriculum guidelines for school administration--as well as with the major national reports on reinventing leadership for tomorrow's schools.

A rapidly growing number of states are requiring aspiring school administrators to take and pass the ISLLC examination. Information about the ISLLC standards and the assessment is found at http://www.umsl.edu/~mpea/Pages/AboutISLLC/AboutISLLC.html

Our Department analyzed its leadership curricula in relation to the ISLLC standards. Our curricula are supportive of the standards. Students preparing for education leadership positions who are not currently certified as school administrators by their state department of education are advised to 1) contact their state department of education to learn if they must take the ISLLC assessment and 2) review the standards prior to beginning our leadership programs so they can make course selections that will help them pass the ISLLC assessment.

Professional Certification

None of our graduate programs are designed to satisfy fully any state's certification requirements for school district administrators or supervisors. There are no certification standards for students preparing for leadership roles in human service agencies.

If students want to qualify for an administrative or supervisory certificate from their state department of education or from the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD) ( http://www.ceasd.org/ ), they must request a copy of their state department of education's or CEASD certification requirements and then use those requirements to tailor their programs of study to help satisfy those requirements.
